GEPOTECH coating system from SCHOMBURG: stray current prevented in seconds

When operating trams, stray current can easily occur when conductive structural components are connected with the ground without any insulation. This stray current can cause high costs during the operation of trams and underground trains and lead to safety issues because the tracks often form two terminal poles (which are not isolated from the ground). In order to prevent this eletro-chemical reaction, the business unit of SCHOMBURG ICS GmbH for road and trackway construction developed a new product as an extension to the hot spray applied GEPOTECH systems.

Stray current is a hotly debated topic for planners and builders concerning trackway construction. Inadequate isolation against such currents leads to undesirably high material degredation to the tracks and below ground pipework. The consequence is costly restoration or even renewal of these structural components. With the system GEPOTECH-10/25 it is demonstrably possible to guarantee high isolation protection. The new development from SCHOMBURG is a two component polyurea (PUA) which isolates stray current highly effectively. Therefore the disadvantageous repercussions of stray current can be avoided whilst conforming to DIN standards.

The coating is applied by hot spray techniques to the rails, turnbuckles and the varying track boxings. Duration of the hardening phase: approx. 10 seconds. In addition the track components so coated have better corrosion protection as well as high impact and abrasion resistance and are therefore very long lasting. In order to carry out the coating SCHOMBURG ICS cooperates with contractual partners who are specially trained in hot spray techniques.

This year SCHOMBURG ICS has already successfully carried out a large project in the Netherlands. At the Rotterdam transport company BV Remise Beverwaard track sections and mountings were isolated using hot spray techniques with GEPOTECH-10/25 . In the process 38 track sections each 18 m long including mountings were coated with GEPOTECH-10/25 . Following preparatory measures such as e.g. the removal of loose rust scale, the track sections were masked off and the application of the primer was commenced. Afterwards the appropriate rails were coated with GEPOTECH-10/25 using hot spray techniques at a material temperature of approx. 80ºC.

After approx. 30-40 seconds the GEPOTECH-10/25 can be mechanically loaded which allowed continual swapping between coated and uncoated rails. The rapid reaction time of GEPOTECH-10/25 made sure using these techniques that in only 1.5 weeks a total of 1.2 km of rails with all associated mountings were coated and consequently protected against stray current corrosion.

GEPOTECH-10/25 has already been tested positively by the Wuppertal Technical Academy e.V. (laboratory for corrosion protection and electrical engineering).
